UNIQUE WINES FOR THE HOLIDAYS
GENTIL 2016 A kaleidoscope of grapiness, produced exclusively from hand harvested grapes in predominantly clay and limestone vineyards, from a dozen of the most favored localities in and around Riquewihr. Gentil "Hugel" allies the suave, spicy flavor of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of both Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. Terroir: The grapes used to produce Hugels "Classic" wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr. Vinification: Hugel Gentil is a traditional Alsace blend of varying amounts of Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat and Sylvaner. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in neutral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring. Beginning with the 2009 vintage, Gentil is bottled exclusively with the DIAM closure to avoid any risk of cork taint. From The Wine Advocate "You start into the Hugel world with the Gentil Hugel, a dry white assemblage of all noble Alsatian grape varieties except of Pinot Noir. The wine “revives an ancient Alsace tradition whereby a wine assembled from a range of noble grapes was called 'Gentil.'" The Hugels communicate and further: "Perfectly dry, our Gentil brings together the elegance of Riesling, the richness of Pinot Gris, the fruit-driven aromas of Gewurztraminer and Muscat, and the freshness of Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner." |
PINOT BLANC CUVEE
LES AMOURS 2016 to Georges Hugel, in 1970 a titled English Lady and a wine writer were having lunch at Georges’ parent’s home. The Lady commented to Jean Hugel (Georges’ father, 1898-1980) how much she enjoyed the wine but that it was very difficult to find in England, as production and sales were very small. In addition, at this time, many consumers still mistook most wines in the elongated green bottles to be German and therefore sweet—the English market was not known for their sweet palate in wines! The Lady (whose name is unfortunately not remembered) remarked many times throughout that fated lunch how lovely the Hugel Pinot Blanc was and a fitting name might be Cuvée Les Amoureux (the lover’s blend). As it was, the Hugel family had already been trying to find a suitable way to distinguish Hugel Pinot Blanc from other Pinots, while making it recognizably French. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) the name Cuvée Les Amoureux was not suitable because it was too similar to an already existing vineyard in Burgundy. Eventually, the Hugel family decided on “Cuvée Les Amours”—a name automatically associated with the French and love, as the Pinot Blanc is a lovely wine! Hugel’s Pinot Blanc “Cuvée Les Amours” was registered as a trademark in most countries where Hugel wine is exported. The U.S. trademark was approved in 1972 and since then the wine has been a great success with American consumers. |
RIESLING CLASSIC 2015 Terroir: The grapes used to produce Hugels "Classic" wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr. Vinification: Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in nuetral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring. From The Wine Advocate "New is the Classic (former Hugel) range that represents "the essence of the pure, dry Famille Hugel style" and now includes Muscat and Pinot Gris, along with all the other noble grapes. The grapes of the Classic range are predominantly purchased but obligatory hand-picked from vineyards with clay-limestone soils in Riquewihr and neighbouring villages, and give classic gastronomic wines with a dry expression." |

Victorieux Champagne, Champagne FR~
Established in Maine, by Thomas M. Brems (J.D., University of Maine School of Law ‘17) Victorieux® Champagne currently imports a Brut Millésime 2009 and a Rosé Brut. Our true Grower Champagnes, sourced from a registered Vigneron Independent, are vinted in a three-generational family winery located in the Côte de Sézanne region of Champagne, France. Thomas began his immersion into French culture by attending a lycée in Troyes, France in 2008. His mother, Cara, opened a small family restaurant in the nearby countryside town of Aix-en-Othe, providing further exposure to the vintners of the local villages and hamlets. Nestled in the small village of Fontaine-Denis, he discovered the champagne of Cédric Guyot. This true Champagne is from Côte de Sézanne, Champagne, France. An excellent spring to fall selection, this luxurious wine offers truly unique terroir and vibrancy. Focused fruity nose with nutty overtones and a subtle syrup note. Fleshy, soft, fruity palate showingsavoury freshness and aromatic precision.
Clambake Chardonnay, Mendocino California~
Inspired by the summer tradition, the Clambake Chardonnay isn’t your typical big-boy chardonnay. Our chardonnay is picked in its youth to produce a lighter and crisper expression of California chardonnay than you may be used to, and its stainless-steel fermentation gives it a clean finish that will make your clambake food sing a little louder (and cut through that dunk of butter, too). But lest we forget, chardonnay is still king so there’s enough richness and body to stand up to those impeccable potatoes and meaty lobsters staring ‘atcha. I guess you could say chardonnay traded in his crown for flip-flops this evening. - Winemaker's Notes
Clambake Rose, Mendocino California~
Estate grown, 100% carignon, hand crafted and batch numbered; this gorgeous pale pink-salmon color rose has intoxicating aromas and flavors of cherry, plum and strawberry accompanied by incredible minerality. Dry and delicious, great texture and balance as well make this a uper versatile wine that can go with just about anything.
Domaine Pascal Cheverny Rouge, Loire France~
Located in Vineuil in the Loire Valley, close to Blois and right above the Loire River is where, in 1960, the domaine was established. It is here in Cheverny that Pascal grows his Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Gamay on silicieous clay, and the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Romorantin on the sandy, pebbly soils. Averaging around 20 years of age, some plots date back 50 years while others are recent additions; his wines show a liveliness and vivacity and reflect the sustainable efforts they undergo to keep the land in harmony. In Cour-Cheverny Pascal produces the coveted Romorantin, which continues to show their longevity when grown with care. 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Gamay, Grown on siliceous clay on chalky soils from 10 hectares. Harvest is done mechanically in mid-September, after which fermentation lasts about 15 days. Fermentation and maturation both take place in stainless.
Cristia Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Rhone France~
Created by Etienne Grangeon 70 years ago, the property originally comprised 2 hectares of Grenache. It was developed further by the driving force of his son Alain, who joined the domaine in 1963. Passionate about viticulture, he notably contributed to the expansion of the domaine and planted improved grape varieties such as Syrah and Mourvèdre and created the identity of Cristia, based on the knowledge and respect of his soils. Then, in 1999, Baptiste and Dominique joined their father. Their priorities were to concentrate on selecting the best parcels in order to produce a wine of a great quality, with a good ageing potential, to commercialise in France as
well as for export. This wine is a beautiful bright garnet red. Aromas of black fruits and wild herbs prevail. Good
attack on the palate, a fine wine which is elegant and well-structured with good volume and length based on fruity and spicy aromas.
